On October 22, director Doug Langway and co-writer Lawrence Ferber’s film “Bear City”—reviewed by Joseph R. Saporito in these pages in July—opened at the Quad Cinema, in the West Village, for a week’s run and that night, the night of the Hunter Moon, Joe Fiore hosted the “Bear City” opening night after party at the bear bar Rockbar, formerly the Dugout, and often known as Rockbear, on Christopher Street.
Marking the occasions, including Rockbar’s first anniversary, was an “Underbear” underwear party and a “Bear City” Bear contest, with Blake Evan Sherman as MC and, as judges, other cast members and creators of “Bear City,” including Gerald McCullouch (“CSI”), Joe Conti, Gregory Gunter, original Village People Cowboy Randy Jones, and Max Scott.
Gino, sexy Drummer Bear in his Mohawk, Greg, leatherman Spike, and J.J. were the contestants. Greg was the winner and Drummer Bear and J.J. were the runners-up.
Bear titleholders Mr. International Grizzly George, Mr. MetroBear Sunshine, and Mr. MetroCub Eddie were among the many bears and cubs present. Go-Go Bear Mr. Woof danced and DJ Damian was responsible for the music.
