The Bucks MC, the motorcycle club based in Pennsylvania, holds its 37th annual Santa Saturday®, the oldest and largest east coast leather charitable fundraiser, for which the Bucks have exclusively the registered trademarked name, on November 27, the Saturday of Thanksgiving Weekend, at the Paradise, the club located in the Empress Hotel, in Asbury Park, New Jersey, for the third consecutive year. The popular event, formerly held in New Hope, Pennsylvania, and sanctioned by AMCC (the Atlantic Motorcycle Coordinating Council), attracts hundreds of leathermen and leatherwomen, bears and cubs, from all over the Northeast, and generally garners more than $20,000 for various worthy causes.
Since the Bucks began holding Santa Saturday®, they have raised over $440,000 for such charities as the Bucks County Area Agency on Aging, Family Service Association of Bucks County, the AIDS Community Alliance, Center House of Asbury Park, Check-Mate of Monmouth County, and the Visiting Nurse Association of Central New Jersey Community Health Center's Ryan White Program with this effort.
The centerpiece of Santa Saturday® is an auction, conducted by leather barker par excellence Jo Arnone and coordinated by JoAnn, of leatherwear and leathergear, artworks, gift certificates and gift baskets, and the clothes off the back and down to the skin of some iconic figure, such as the current Mr. New Jersey Leather. There is also entertainment by individuals associated with the Bucks and with the Paradise, with the Bucks' John Ramos as MC. Drinks and refreshments, photos with a leatherbear Santa, and wares of a leather vendor are available.
Doors open at noon on the 27th, the show and auction run from 1 to 6 p.m., and admission is by donation of $15. The Paradise is located at 101 Asbury Avenue, a block from the boardwalk, the beach and the Atlantic Ocean. The Empress, the host hotel, gives a special discount on accommodations to those who mention that they're attending Santa Saturday. Call 732/774-0100 for reservations.
