On March 13, Dance:208, produced by Joe Fiore, at the LGBT Community Center in Manhattan, held its first-ever Poz Dance-"for positive people ... HIV and otherwise," according to the publicity piece-which, despite inclement weather, attracted a sizeable crowd, boding well, according to Fiore, for Poz Dances to figure into Dance:208's future planning.
With bear title holders and bears without titles, familiar Fire Island faces, flaggers, Village and Chelsea folks, and others making up the high-spirited crowd, attendees danced to music by DJ Tony Ruiz, of XXL and Disney Gay Days fame, who had flown in that day from Pittsburgh, and played the latest favorites by Lady Gaga, Madonna, and the Black-Eyed Peas. As we danced, angels in David Aviles' mural watched over us, representing, said the artist, those, no longer with us, who could not be here.
For the next Dance:208, on March 27 at 8 p.m., the Center remembers the legendary Paradise Garage disco with Garage Classics, featuring DJ Hex Hector. Eagerly anticipated on April 17 is the popular, twice yearly Fur Ball. Visit www.gaycenter.org for advance tickets and further information.
