On February 2, the United States Senate confirmed Pete Buttigieg, former Mayor of South Bend Indiana and erstwhile Democratic Presidential candidate, at Secretary of Transportation, making him both the first openly gay Presidential Cabinet member, as well as, at 39, the youngest U.S. Transportation Secretary ever.
On receiving the news, Buttigieg tweeted, “I'm honored and humbled by today's vote in the Senate—and ready to get to work.” Buttigieg took the oath of office, administered by Vice President Kamala Harris, on a family Bible held by his husband Chasten.
