On January 24, at the LGBTQ Community Center, in New York City, Excelsior MC unveiled its Leather Art Retrospective, on display through February 8. The first night was a benefit, with all proceeds slated for New Alternatives, for Homeless LGBT Youth, and with admission priced at $15, raised $2,200, which includes a $200 pledge from Sirens MC.
There were exhibits remembering past leather hangouts the Mineshaft and the old Eagle NYC. A display was devoted to the Mr. Fire Island Leather contest, which Excelsior co-produces, with photos by or from the collection of this writer, and the work of custom leatherwear designer David Samuel Menkes, who designed our sashes and vests, as well as the Swarovski-crystal-encrusted jock strap and harness, worn by Excelsior President and Mr. Fire Island Leather 2017 Sir Joseph, at the International Mr. Leather contest, in Chicago, in 2018. There was a wall of club colors, with black leather vests representing many of the clubs with which Excelsior has shared events.
Leathermen, Leatherwomen, Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, and titleholders were among those who filled the Bureau of General Services, Queer Division, on the second floor of the Center.
