At approximately 2 a.m. on June 12, gunman Omar Mateen, an American citizen in his 20s, opened fire and took hostages in a deadly shooting spree at Pulse, a gay bar in Orlando, Florida. The tragic massacre left 50 dead and 53 wounded. Mateen was killed by police, who responded to the killings and the hostage situation. Vigils were slated for June 13 in front of Stonewall Inn, in New York City, and elsewhere in memory of those who were killed by Mateen.
